Although it was founded in 1880 its current building was inaugurated in 1910 in the framework of the celebration of the Centenary of the Républica. Today it offers temporary exhibitions of national and foreign artists, in addition to a thematic selection of its collection, which adds more than 5,500 works, including sculptures, paintings, engravings, drawings, photographs, videos and registration of facilities and performances.

The MNBA is an institution of the Directorate of Libraries Archives and Museums (Dibam), under the Ministry of Education of the Government of Chile.
