Ludruk is a traditional drama art from East Java. Ludruk is a traditional drama that was exhibited by an art group that was spread on a stage by taking stories about the life of the people everyday, the story of the struggle, and so on interspersed with jokes and accompanied by gamelan as music.
Dialogue/monologue in ludruk is entertaining and makes the audience laugh, using typical Surabaya language, although sometimes there are guest stars from other regions such as Jombang, Malang, Madura, Madiun with different accent. The straightforward language used in ludruk makes him easily absorbed by nonintelek circles (pedicab drivers, patrols, public transport drivers, etc.).
A ludruk staging usually starts with Remo Dance and interspersed with the performance of a character who plays "Pak Sakera", a Madura hero.
Kartolo is a legendary ludruk comedian from Surabaya, East Java. He has lived more than 40 years in the world of ludruk. The name Kartolo and his distinctive voice, with innocent and intelligent jokes, are known in almost all of East Java, even to Central Java.
Ludruk is different from ketoprak from Central Java. Ketoprak stories are often taken from ancient stories (history and fairy tales), and are conveying certain messages. While Ludruk tells the story of daily life (usually) among the cilik.
